Scott Baier Interview on The Bob Harden Show – Dec. 14th

[00:00:05] Announcer
Welcome back to the Bob Harden Show. And now here’s your host Bob Harden.

[00:00:11] Bob Harden
Thanks so much for joining us here on the show. It’s brought to you in part by Gulfshore Playhouse. Changing lives through exceptional theatre experiences and now doing so in a new performing arts and education center in downtown Naples. Absolutely beautiful. If you haven’t seen it, you should visit it. Get tickets. It’s right in the corner of 41 and Goodlette-Frank. Visit the website gulfshoreplayhouse.org. Coming up, we’re going to visit with Larry Bell, Endowed Professor at the University of Houston in Space Architecture. Right now, we have Scott Baier. Scott is the CEO of the Community Pregnancy Clinics. Uh, Scott, thank you so much for joining us here on the show.

[00:00:47] Scott Baier
Thank you, Bob. Happy Friday.

[00:00:49] Bob Harden
Happy Friday. Happy Friday the 13th! Yeah. Scott, uh, could you tell us about the Community Pregnancy Clinics?

[00:00:57] Scott Baier
We are one of the oldest pregnancy resource centers in the country, established in 1974. We were one of the original 13, actually, in the country. We’ve grown now to be the largest in the state of Florida, with five office clinics in Naples, Fort Myers, Sarasota, and Gainesville, and two mobile clinics. We also have a number of other programs serving families around the state of Florida, not only with pregnancy services but also education, referral services, and all sorts of great things as we help families feel lovable so they’re more love-able, hopefully bringing life into the world.

[00:01:36] Bob Harden
Outstanding organization, I must say. I want to talk to you more about your services and new developments. But before we do, you are an advocate for not passing Amendment Four, the abortion amendment in the election just happened on November the 5th. I want to get an update from you—your feelings about that and thoughts about it, but also any follow-up on what’s happened in the state.

[00:02:02] Scott Baier
Absolutely. So we dodged a bullet, literally speaking. Lives are being saved more so now than would have been if that amendment had passed. At the same time, we’re joyful and hopeful for the future and so grateful that we didn’t pass that amendment. In one sense, it wasn’t a great victory because we won with only 57%. So we won basically because of that 60% threshold. Long story short, we won because of the pregnant pig amendment in 2002, which was passed to protect pregnant pigs. By 2008, they raised the threshold to 60%, and because of that, we won. It wasn’t a great victory, but it was a victory. We’re gearing up already because they can bring it back on the ballot in two years. They spent $121 million this time, and if they remove one or two of those exceptions—such as parental consent or the doctor requirement—they could have a better chance of winning next time. We’ve got our work to do, and that’s educating hearts and minds.

[00:03:22] Bob Harden
Well, I’ll say this: I congratulate you on what happened because, quite frankly, the language in the amendment was extremely misleading. Just reading it on face value, it sounded okay. But it had severe problems. I’m so grateful that you and others participated to defeat this amendment.

[00:04:00] Scott Baier
Yes, it was a great showing of the pro-life movement. I’ve never seen it more galvanized. The left has corporate money and taxpayer funding, but we’ve got the people on the ground who believe in this cause. This is the greatest human rights abuse issue in our country’s history, perhaps including slavery. But this is a time for hope and joy. With the Trump administration coming in January 20th, we’re hopeful. For example, pro-lifers are in jail today because of the FACE Act. Day one, Trump has already said he plans to release the 12 people still in jail for peacefully protesting. We also want to repeal the FACE Act and start defunding Planned Parenthood. With Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy potentially in charge of the DOJ, there’s hope for significant changes.

[00:05:54] Bob Harden
No question about it. Certainly low-hanging fruit to start with that. Let’s get back to the clinic itself and the work you’re doing. I’ve been active as a participant at some of your events. It’s heartwarming to meet families who have benefited from your services. The love and joy experienced with young people in their lives, not only during pregnancy but also afterward, is incredible. Maybe you could expand on that.

[00:06:32] Scott Baier
Absolutely. We have all the numbers and statistics, but I love the stories. I held a baby last week who was a result of our services. The family—both mother and father—were drug addicts when they first came to us. They worked hard, achieved sobriety through one of our referral services, and now have a beautiful baby boy named Jasper. Another story from our 50th anniversary party in the park: a woman approached our mobile van and said, “You helped me 13 years ago.” That choice for life now means five kids, including one in high school playing football. Stories like these make it real. Beyond crisis services, we’re also in schools delivering messages of hope and love with our sexual health education programs. There’s so much happening, and we’re excited for the future as we head into 2025.

[00:08:46] Bob Harden
Absolutely. And all this costs money. How are you funded?

[00:08:50] Scott Baier
We are totally privately funded. We don’t receive any taxpayer dollars. We rely on people who give money, time, and talent. For example, we have men volunteering as pit crew members for our mobile unit, ensuring our ladies on the van can focus on their work. If anyone wants to learn more, they can visit supportcpci.com.
